Nature is a vast knowledge bank. The genesis of Kelkar's "Scientific Research Centre" began in 1990 with the aim of deciphering this knowledge in applicable scientific process useful for the betterment of mankind.
This centre located at Mulund (Mumbai), is engaged in academic programmes leading to the post-graduate studies and development of viable industrial bio-technologies.
The University of Mumbai and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India, have accorded their recognition to the center.
The Activities of the Trust include:

  • Running an Educational Institute(KET's V.G.Vaze College Campus, Mulund, Mumbai)
  • Carrying Research Activities (KET's Scientific Research Centre)
  • Providing Educational facilities, training etc. to needy and qualifying students.

The visionary with a missionary zeal
"Scientific Research Centre" is the vision of Late Mr. Govind Kelkar, the former Chairman of Kelkar Education Trust, the Managing Director of S.H.Kelkar & Co. Ltd. and also an internationally recognised Creative Perfumer. He realised the need to have basic research in the area of medicinal and aromatic plants. The plant kingdom provides life-saving drugs and also flavour and fragnance ingredients for the mankind. He visualised the need to preserve, propagate and improve the plants related to these two industries. This is how the Scientific Research Centre was established in 1996.
The centre , though in its infancy, has already achieved notable progress towards understanding the mysteries of nature, made possible by our team of highly skilled and motivated scientists and supporting staff.
The Institute is well equipped with a library for Biotechnology.
The objectives of the centre are Human Resource Development for the science of Bio-technology and researches useful for the common man worldwide.

The major projects undertaken at the Kelkar's Scientific Research Centre:
  1. Plant Bio-technology : The research deals with micro/clonal propogation of selected aromatic and medicinal plants, cell cultures, genetically transformed cultures, multiplication for the product synthesis and establishment of the clonal plants and breeder stock in the field.
  2. Microbial Bio-transformations : For production of exotic ingredients for flavours and fragrances also useful in aromatherapy.
  3. Bio-reactor Technology : Deals with the synthesis of organic molecules using plant and microbial cells and enzymes.
  4. Cosmetic Bio-technology : Action of herbal compounds against skin microbes.
